ABOUT

Yuka Morii does not draw her cards. She sculpts them in clay, then photographs the finished models against arranged scenery or on location.

That makes her one of the most distinctive contributors to the game: a Morii card is a photograph of a physical object that somebody made by hand, sitting in a set otherwise full of paint and pixels. The texture and the real lighting are not effects.

A graduate of Tokyo Zokei University with an MA in Living Design from the Kuwasawa Design Institute — where she now teaches illustration part-time — she first appeared on a 1998 Pokémon Plaza jumbo promo, and began contributing regularly from 2000 with Crossing the Ruins….

She has also designed mascots for various companies and published several art and culture books. Her favourite Pokémon is Ditto.
