ABOUT

Born in 1973, Tomokazu Komiya has the most divisive style in the game, and it is entirely deliberate. He works in primitivism — an art movement drawing on prehistoric, tribal and children's art — which on a Pokémon card means deformed proportions, loose colouring, and faces exaggerated well past what the official artwork allows.

Collectors recognise a Komiya card instantly. Nobody mistakes one for anybody else's.

His first cards were in Japanese Expansion Sheet 1, reaching English players in Neo Genesis. He illustrated several Pokémon Tales manga volumes between 1997 and 2007, and contributed Sunflora and Smeargle to the 2023 Pokémon × Van Gogh collaboration.
