ABOUT

Miki Tanaka (田中未樹) was born on 22 September in Tokyo, and paints her cards by hand — gouache on A4 watercolour paper, with no digital tools at any stage.

The result is unmistakable: flat, simple shapes, very little variation in shade, and almost no line art around the subject. In a game increasingly made of digital rendering, her cards look like paintings because they are.

Her route in was unusual. She majored in English at university, then worked part-time at a traditional Japanese dance prop shop in Asakusa, painting custom designs onto fans and bamboo hats. She was already illustrating for magazines, books and advertising before her first card — Slowpoke, in Fossil.
