ABOUT
Hajime Kusajima's cards are hard to summarise in one style, because he kept changing it — deliberately, and across two decades.
His first cards were Karen's Pokémon in the Japanese Pokémon VS expansion, reaching English players in Expedition Base Set. Through the e-Card series he worked in watercolour and ink, sometimes light with thin outlines, sometimes deep with heavy brushwork. The early EX era brought a computer-aided approach: flat colour, tonal highlights, busy backgrounds. By the late EX sets the outlines had thickened and the shadows deepened, mixing soft realism with strong light effects. From Stormfront on he moved freely between all of them.
He also held graphics roles on three PlayStation and PSP titles between 1995 and 2007, and stopped contributing new card art around the start of the Sun & Moon series.
